- Traditional hand cane
Individual strands of cane are woven directly onto the frame through
each hole until the cane pattern is created.
- French hand cane
Single strands of cane are individually glued and plugged into each
hole, only going part way through the frame. This method is the
most labour-intensive of all caning methods, and is primarily used
for caning backs.
- Machine cane
Used for seats (including canoe seats), backs, and cabinetry panels,
cane is cut to size from a roll of pre-woven material. It is then
fitted into a groove, and secured with a piece of reed or spline.
- Spot cane repairs
At times, it is possible to repair small areas of damaged cane instead
of replacing the entire section. Factors such as location, size,
and the overall state of the caned piece are taken into consideration.
- Fibre rush
This is a durable and pliable material made from pre-twisted paper.
Rush-style patterns can be identified as four triangles that meet
in the centre.
- Pre-twisted natural rush
Available in the form of hand-twisted seagrass, this material provides
the look and feel of its’ natural properties and is akin to the
bulrush, or the cattail leaf rush.
- Wicker & Lloyd loom restoration
Wicker is a term commonly used to describe a variety of woven furniture
made of rattan, willow, and other natural materials including paper
fibre rush used in Lloyd’s loom construction. Repair work is colour-matched,
and entire pieces can be painted for a complete transformation.
- Danish cord
Used on Scandinavian furniture designed from the 1950’s to the present,
Danish cord is an elegant material that can be woven in a variety
of patterns. The results are always stunning.
- Splint
This is a flat woody material that is commonly woven onto country
style chairs. Splint is cut from a number of sources including ash,
hickory, and the inside of the rattan palm plant. Similar weaving
patterns are also achieved using Shaker tape, a tough cotton webbing
that comes in a wide range of colours.
- Reed
Derived from the inner core of the rattan palm plant, this material
comes in a number of widths and shapes including flat and rounded
varieties.
- Chair reglueing and repairs
This includes stabilizing wobbly chairs, repairing breaks, replacing
dowels, stretchers, and spindles. All repair work is carefully colour-matched
to the original piece.
